Public
DataWeb was set up in 1999 following a three year research project
funded by the EC. The project set out to find the underlying real
needs of the public in adoption and usage of digital services.
The projects findings are obvious,
but few other organisations have addressed them.
The need is for simplicity and
speed, and relevance of the subject to meet the needs of the user.
The hard part is building systems
and services in-line with these three pivotal requirements.
The Internet is built for those
with the skill to use it, to upkeep and pay for a PC and broadband
connection.
Most if not all services based
around the Internet do not attempt to provide an interface that
changes the service to suite the requirements of the general
public.
Our methods approach the issues
from the point of view that the underlying services need fixing
for all inclusive use; so we have researched the need (relevance)
we have brought it all together (speed) and we have then
re-purposed digital material for simplicity of use and
navigation.
Public access kiosk experience has
proven our concepts,
we have the highest usage of any published figures.
This experience guided us to build
similar services for mobile users.
