Talking to a Kiosk: the man machine interface

Councillor Scott Cassie launched the first kiosk service to provide free SKYPE telephony.

The PDWeb kiosk located at the RGU Sports centre in Aberdeen was the location.

Councillor Cassie simply touched the screen options to phone three separate numbers:

The first was to the PDWeb Help desk, Councillor Cassie asked how the weather was in Sheffield (thinking PDWeb was based there...) I have no idea said the speakers in the kiosk we are based in Halifax. The conversation recovered from that point on and a general short conversation followed.

The call was ended by touching the end option: a red telephone icon

Then, Councillor Cassie selected to call an Aberdonian studying at a university in China, the call was quick to connect and faultless; the conversation was short due to the time difference as the student was mostly concerned about closing time at the local nightclub.
Finally, Councillor Cassie selected TRAVELINE to make direct enquiries about transport times and routes.

Everything went satisfactorily and the SKYPE kiosk service will soon be operating on all the cities units and the services provided will be expanded.

Early comments have been: 'what a great service for students to contact their folks back home'.

A plugin head set or a telephone hand set can be added for privacy.

A two way video link will also be included in the next phase.
